The Windsor Homeless Project Annual Sleep Out took place on Friday 5th April 2019
This was our fifth annual Sleep Out to raise money for the Windsor Homeless Project.
To be honest we would have preferred not to have to hold this event.
However, homelessness is massively on the increase for many reasons. This is something that could happen to anyone, and we are passionate about giving support to those who have fallen on hard times, so that they can be given an opportunity to rebuild their lives.
Not only does this event raise vital money that is used to develop the work that we do with our guests, but it also gives a unique experience to those taking part – a very small taste of rough sleeping.
On 5th April volunteers chose to spend one uncomfortable night in order to give hope to those who at the moment have no choice but to live like this every day. THANK YOU – over £15,000 was raised – amazing!
The evening was a great success – great entertainment, food and community spirit, followed by sleeping out in a very chilly environment. Here’s our very own Benta Hickley’s report on the evening:-
“Thank you all SO much for your support on Friday night!
From the sleepers and their sponsors and those who came for the evening entertainment, to everyone else who made it happen!
Particular mention – and gratitude – to those who donated food (especially Ravi, Cinnamon Cafe and our own Stephanie and Catherine); those who decorated the room (Jake, Hala and Cait); those who provided entertainment: Source, Pop goes the Choir and The Skin and Blister Sisters as well as Ieva and the Emotional Art workshop (all awesome by the way) and equipment (Pop’s choir master), and boxes for us to sleep in (Palmer’s/ Wilkins). And Anne Marie, who not only took photographs, but also joined in the Sleep Out.
Also, of course, the Youth and Community Centre that allowed us to use their hall; to Rev June, Susan and Andy who met everyone coming in, and Tom, Rob, Martin and Paula who looked out for us all night.
And finally to Davina and her colleagues from Samaritans who came and cleaned up after us while we packed up our stuff and ate our breakfast (did I thank the bacon butty team – the perfect breakfast after the night out – thank you!)
The whole event had a fantastic atmosphere – people who had never met before helping others create the box beds and carry them out, and sharing camping gear and tips on keeping warm. It was great watching people dance with, chat to, and slept next to people that had been strangers just hours earlier
I’m particularly in awe of people who came alone – it was daunting enough coming with friends AND knowing maybe half the sleepers, but to those who rocked up and *made* friends … well, everyone was amazing but some were extra amazing!
We really hope you enjoyed it … enough to plan to join us again next year!
We are always trying to improve the event so if you have any suggestions for next year please let us know at SleepOut@WindsorHomelessProject.org
Thank you from the whole team. “
