Nick’s Story – WHP Project Manager – From Helped to Helping
My background is in the construction industry where I worked for over 10 years. I had a problem with addiction – drink and drugs – and it really affected my relationships with my family and friends.
I tried to sort myself out, but in the end I realised I needed outside help. I went into rehab and when I was there I realised just what a damaging impact my addiction was having on my life. With the help I received in rehab I recovered and left my old life and addictions behind.
I wanted to find a purpose to my life again. I started to work as a volunteer at the Windsor Homeless Project, and eventually became an official part of the team. I knew from my own experience that if people with problems are given a break and support then they can recover and rebuild their lives.
It is great to be doing a job I really love and offering other people support, the type that helped me on the road to recovery. Engage, empower, rebuild – the steps I took, and the steps I want to encourage our guests to take.
